Dulce et Decorum Est

Dulce et Decorum Est

Wilfrid Owen MC. Born;18 march 1893.

Killed 4 November 1918. Aged 25.

Sambre-oise Canal, France.

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

I have only got about 1 watch left, one of wHich is an RFC Trench watch. So i am afraid the Russian contingent is much reduced. I have reinstated the blog, mainly because of e.mail requests.

Vostok Amphibia Swing Lugs Received

Just received this lovely Vostok Amphibia swivle lugs,of a great seller from Ukraine, new to me,who delivered it in record time,4 days.
This is quite an uncommon example of this Vostok type,it has a greenish yellow dial,i am afraid it looks a bit washed out in the sunlite in my picture, but the dial is in excellent condition.
Indeed, the whole watch is in excellent condition, right down to the correct domed crown.
Keeps exceptional time, looks great on the wrist, and is extremely easy to read,as befits a diver from this period.
Check out my other examples, under"Divers Vostok 200/300m Amphibia"under the drop down menu on the right. SOLD

Cyrillic Poljot Kosmos Automatic 29j Day Date Pointer

Just received this rather lovely Poljot Kosmos, day date pointer.I have always had a great love for these, made at a time when the 1st MWF, were at the top of there game, with the sublime cal;2146 movement.

These old Poljot automatics, look great on the wrist, this one keeps superb time, all functions work as they should. The watch itself is in very good original condition, with the correct early case back. The crown however is not original, but i have a spare, and will replace in due course.

I bought the watch under the offer process,on e.bay of a lovely seller, new to me,from Ukraine. SOLD

Extremely Rare Issued Czechoslovakian Pobeda Received

Just received this extremely rare Issued Czech` military Pobeda watch from 1957. It has the 41m 32yh 15j movement, keeping seamless time. These watches came in two types, one with Czech issue marks on the dial,[as above] and two, with written issue marks on case back. I have never seen a watch with both.
I must thank the extremely honest seller from Checkoslovakia, for this watch. I bought over the Christmas period, and our wires got a bit crossed, but the seller,[thank you jindra, frantik 123],still managed to get the watch to me.
I am extremely pleased to have found this watch,it has everything i like, similar to 15j Sturmanskie, and very understated. SOLD

1st World War R.F.C Trench Watch After Repair by Steve at Rytetime

Have just received the R,F,C Trench watch, see previous sad story], back from Stephen Burrage.Once again he has accomplished a minor miracle. The watch was gaining a half hour in every hour. The watch crystal had been clumsily glued on.also the pin set that changes the hands was not operating. He repaired all the defects, and it is now keeping excellent time,[which is quite something for a pin pallet movement].I could not recommend him more highly.[Follow the links to his website in my favourite links section,on the right hand side of the blog].
I have purchased a new hand made bund strap, off of David at vintagewatchstraps,as usual he has done a great job,and the strap compliments the watch superbly.
