Anthem For Doomed Youth. Wilfred Owen. Remembrance Week.

Wilfred Owen. Killed in Action. 4th November 1918. Sambre_Oise Canal, France.

                                                   Anthem For Doomed Youth.

What passing_bells for these who die as cattle?
-Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
                  Only the stuttering rifles`rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
                   No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of morning save the choirs,-
                   The shrill, demented Choirs  of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holly glimmers of goodbyes.
                    The pallor of girls` brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds.
And each slow dusk a drawing- down of blinds.

Rare. Czechoslovakian Military Issued Pobeda,

Rare Czechoslovakian Issued Pobeda.

This is the much rarer version of the Czech issued Pobedas. With Issue marks on the case back. As opposed to the imprinted dial version. See drop down list on the right hand side of this blog, to find this type.

As i said many years ago. You never find both together on the same watch, [imprinted dial and imprinted case back].

I must thank, once again, Micha Katz,[ formally ebay account Frantik], for this purchase, among others.A lovely watch.

Unfortunately, I also paid for an Czechoslovakian issued Shturmanskie. I have since heard nothing from him, i sincerely hope he has not met with a serious accident. I will update when i find out more.

Slava 60 second Split Second Stopwatch

Slava 60 second Split Second Stopwatch.

Another in the bargain basement category Of Russian watches.
This is the slightly Rarer 60 second version and in perfect condition.

Still use these to time internet auctions, slightly more interesting than using one of those ghastly automatic computer sniping tools.

14k Rose Gold Luch Ultra Thin. Cal;2209

14k Rose Gold Luch Ultra Thin Cal;2209.

I bought this of a lovely seller from France. It was cheap, the seller accepted my sensible offer, outside of  ebay. Once again the ridiculous buy it now prices currently on ebay for Russian Rose gold watches, really are in cloud cuckoo land. If they go to auction, they reach a fraction of the buy it now price.[Thats why they sit on ebay for years!] So if you want to buy one wait for an auction.

Having said that, this model is one of the less successful Luch design,s in my opinion .
I just don`t think the colour of the dial goes with the lovely Rose Gold Case.

Still, glad to have it though...

14 k Rose Gold Vostok 17j Dress watch.

Vostok 14k Rose Gold 17j Dress watch.

Have always loved the Russian Rose gold watches, such a lovely colour on the wrist.
The trouble is, most on the internet, are ludicrously over priced, on buy it now purchase.

When they are left to go to auction, they fetch a fraction of the buy it now prices.

This watch is in lovely condition and would have been made in the early 70`s.

One typically Russian "design feature"is the lume. the dial has lume on the outside of the dial indices, but none on the hands.....Making the watch impossible to read in the dark.Quirky to say the least.

The movement is the ubiquitous Cal;2409A 17j

Very pleased to have one back in the collection again.

Czechoslovakian Elchron Factory. Military Issue Stopwatch.

Czechoslovakian Elchron Factory Military Issue Stopwatch.

I am still looking for Cal;3017 Czech` issued military watch to go with the Pobeda. In the mean time dropped on to this quite rare issued stopwatch, note the issue engraving on the dial. Thank heavens for the czech system of issue marks. Something the soviets never got round to.

A big thank you to Micha Katz, for finding it for me.

I do think there is a lot of Rubbish/wishful thinking talked about Russian Military watches. The only genuine issued Russian watch i know off, is The 15/17j Shturmanskies.

I always put all other "military" and "issued" Russian watches in quotation marks, as it`s all based on anecdotal evidence.

I digress....Very pleased to add this little gem.

Poljot Automatic 29j Dress Watch. Cal;2415

Poljot Automatic 29j Cal;2415.

The best period of Russian watchmaking. Simple Elegant. Understated.

Poljot 30j Amphibia. Screw Crown.

Poljot 30j Automatic, Amphibia, Screw Crown.

Not the 1st MWF`s finest moment. But irresistible all the same.
Originally. It was thought because of there rarity, these might have been experimental pieces.
But over the years, more and more have shown up,[with the obligatory dial damage].

In a way they are a one off, they have a slightly different case design to the "normal" amphibia  and of course they have the wacky and poorly engineered reverse crown thread.

Still very glad to have one back in the collection though. Very reasonably priced, as well.

I have carried out a very minor restoration, i have replaced the central seconds hand and bezel with  originals.

Extremely Rare. Vostok Compressor Automatic Amphibian.

Vostok Compressor Automatic Amphibia.

These watches are vanishingly rare. Certainly in this condition.
They do come up for sale, from time to time, but many have defects, damaged case, wrong hands and wrong movement.

This particular watch, is completely original and in beautiful condition.[Thank you Slava].
Importantly, it has the correct cal; 2416 automatic movement and case back.

What surprised me when i received it, was the quality and size compared to normal Vostoks. [Rather like another watch in my collection, Raketa Antarctida "Expedition"]. It is certainly not another run of the mill Vostok.

Both the crowns are screwed, the case back also feels heavier than normal.

It keeps superb time and has an impressive feel and look on the wrist.

A very important addition to the collection.

Rare. Sputnik Award Watch. Tschistopolsky Watch Factory. Cal;2602. [Light Restoration].

Very pleased to have received this Rare Tschistopolsky Sputnik Award Watch.

I had one before, but had to let it go. This particular watch was incredibly Cheap. Mainly because it was missing its seconds disc.[picture 2].Luckily, i was able to source one very quickly, you can see the replacement ticking away happily, [ picture 1].

These watches have been heavily Frankened, over the years, although, the copies have got steadily better. I have never quit understood why, because the copies do not sell for high prices, any profits on them must be very small.

The Sputnik Award watch, has the cal;2602 installed, ticking away nicely.

A pleasing addition to the collection.

Sekonda 17j.Textured/Linen Dial.

I have not been feeling to well lately. {kidney stones]. So imagine what a pleasant surprise it was, when my wife came home from our local shopping centre with this Sekonda in her hand bag.

She has never shown any interest in my watch collection, but like most Women she has got a photographic memory, when needed!!

My wife paid the grand total of £2 for this Sekonda, manufactured during the last gasps of the 1st Moscow Watch Factory. [Poljot].It was on a market stall selling Militaria.

The watch looks as though it has had very little use and is running, it also has a rather beautiful textured dial.

Really has cheered me up.

Vostok Precision Cyrillic.Textured Dial. Cal;2809. 22j.

Another simple understated Vostok precision received. Came in record time.
This is the later Vostok version, as opposed to the earlier Volna.
In lovely condition, keeping excellent time.

I know i keep stating this, but these watches are still very cheap, you really can still pick up bargains, with a little patience and research.

These watches were tested to chronometer grade status by the Russians. The cal;2809 movement, like many other Russian Calibres, are incredibly robust. They can be set up to be supreme time keepers, with their swan neck regulator.

Another great addition.

Check out my other precisions, via the Collection links on the right hand side of my home page.

Czechoslovakian. Air Force Issue .Pobeda. Restoration.

Czechoslovakian Air Force Issue Pobrda. These watches are Rare and starting to command high prices at auction. The above picture shows final restoration.
The watch had been on ebay for some time, with a high buy it now price.. Unfortunately with the wrong case, movement and hands.
At this point i would like to thank Marian,[the seller],After i pointed out the only original Part was the dial, he made me an incredibly generous offer, which i accepted.
The pictures below are the restoration in pictures.
 Non original movement and case.
Non original Hand set and crown
 Donor 1st MWF Movement
Picture with dial removed from Franken movement. [two screws].
Czech Dial on donor movement. Pobeda dial by the side.
Dial attached to correct movement with correct hands mounted.

Back to picture one. This watch shows all of its use and patina and many years of its history plastered all over its dial,. A military watch, just by its raison d`etre should show some form of wear, this one has obviously had a very hard life.Great to bring it back to its original spec.

Great addition to the collection.

Shturmanskie 15j. light Restoration.

   Watch before Reluming.
 Hands and crystal dismounted .
Hands mounted on Tooth pick, ready for reluming.
A lake of lume...Very difficult to get correct shade. I actually started with two tiny amounts.
Hands relumed and remounted. crystal off.

Finished article. Quite pleased with the end result.

As promised another light restoration on a 15j Shturmanskie as issued to Gagarin.
Really is a particularly well preserved example. An excellent addition to the collection.

15j Shturmanskie.

15j Shturmanskie. As Issued at flight schools in the Soviet Union. I can never resist a Shturmanskie, particularly in this condition. Very lucky to purchase it of a seller from Ukraine, new to me.

This particular watch, is running very sweetly and was issued in 3rd Q 1953.
The dial has the sparkly type texture, which is correct. The early 15j Shturmanskies [49/50] had the "flat" dial. As of course, did all of the 17j variant.

I will be giving the watch a very light restoration, [re luming hands]. I am going to keep the central seconds hand, as it is. I have seen to many now, including Tammo`s original discourse, with the hand unpainted.

I will update when finished.

As a matter of interest, i will be undertaking a much more comprehensive restoration, of an uncommon Pobeda. When i receive the relevant parts i will commission  a photographic record.

Rare Vostok Precision. 22j. ["Export"].

Rare. Vostok Precision, 22j. "Export".

Firstly, i would like to thank Yevgen. For another seamless deal. We have had many pleasant transactions over the years.[he even included a spare crown, because he was not happy with the one on the watch, free of charge.].

I am sure it is well known by now, of my wish to re acquire, some of the rarer Vostok precision types. They can still be found, relatively cheaply, harder to find in decent untouched condition, though.

This particular model does not appear often , it would have been manufactured in the late 60`s. Keeps great time and comes with a charming inscription.

You will note i have put Export in exclamation marks. I think the term is nonsense in conjunction with the Russian watch Industry. I think batches were sent out on a need to supply basis. The need for foreign currency was the main driver.
